Why Honeybees Matter

Honeybees play a crucial role in pollination, which is essential for our garden and grapevines.

Raw Honey Benefits

Our raw honey is not only delicious but also packed with health benefits, making it a staple in our community.

Supporting Biodiversity

By keeping bees, we support local biodiversity and promote a healthier environment.

Why We Chose Italian Honey Bees for Our Homestead

When we first started beekeeping at Blackbelly Ranch, we were excited to try a specialty bee variety from a local bee farm. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned — the bees left the hive. While one hive seems to have returned recently, we decided it was time to try a different approach.

After doing research and talking to other beekeepers, we chose Italian honey bees — and we’re really glad we did.

Italian honey bees (Apis mellifera ligustica) are one of the most popular breeds for a reason, especially for beginner and hobby beekeepers.

1. Docile & Gentle Temperament
This was the biggest factor for us. Italian bees are known for being calm, gentle, and easy to work with. They’re much less defensive than some other breeds, which makes hive inspections less stressful — especially important when you have three wild boys running around the ranch!

2. Strong Honey Production
Italians are excellent honey producers. They build up quickly in the spring and forage vigorously during strong nectar flows. While raw honey tastes amazing no matter the breed, we’re looking forward to harvesting more of that beautiful, light-colored Italian honey.

3. Excellent Pollinators for Our Garden
Our garden has already benefited tremendously from having bees on the property. Italians are hardworking foragers that help pollinate our vegetables, fruits, and flowers, leading to better yields and a healthier homestead ecosystem.

The Reality of Beekeeping: Mites Are the Biggest Challenge

While we love the gentle nature of Italian bees, they are more susceptible to Varroa mites than some hardier breeds (like Russians). Mites are the number one threat to honey bee colonies, so staying on top of them is critical.

Here’s what we’re doing to protect our Italian hives:

  • Regular Monitoring — We check mite levels monthly using alcohol washes or sugar rolls. Knowing your count is the first step to effective control.
  • Mite Traps — We’ve installed sticky boards and screened bottom boards to help trap and monitor falling mites.
  • Strong Hive Management — Keeping colonies strong with good nutrition, plenty of space, and young queens helps bees naturally fight off mites.
  • Prevention — Buy queens from reputable breeders known for good genetics and avoid chemical overuse to prevent mite resistance. (We opt for NO chemical use at all.)

Mite management takes consistency, but it’s completely doable — even for new beekeepers.

Beekeeping has been a learning journey filled with trial and error (we’ve had our share!). We’re very hopeful these bees will thrive here on our farm!

Happy beekeeping!
